Walter Charles Lamm Sr., 89, passed away Jan. 14 at Salem Veterans Hospital in Salem VA. Born Nov. 24, 1918 in Allentown, he was a son of the late Charles and Louisa (Trinkle) Lamm. He was the husband of the late Ruth V. (Leeser) who passed in 1997. Walter graduated from AHS in 1936, and was employed by Everson Electric and Bethlehem Steel as an electrician. In June of 1941 he was inducted into the US Army Air Corp, 803rd Engineer Brigade. In Oct. of 1941 he was shipped to the Philippine Islands. He became a POW of the Japanese in May of 1942; survived the Bataan Death March to Camp O' Donnell Prison, then to Cabanatuan Prison. Walter was sent to Pusan Korea via "Hell Ship" Tottori Mara, then to Hoten (Mukden) Prison in Manchuria. He was liberated in Aug. 1945 and discharged from the service in May 1946, and awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. He was later employed by Muhlenberg College as an electrician and Assistant Superintendent of buildings and grounds. He also worked for the Diocese of Allentown as Superintendent of building maintenance until his retirement. He was a member of VFW post 13, the American Legion Herbert Paul Lentz post, the American defenders of Bataan & Corregidor, and the American POW's. Survivors: Sons, Walter Jr. and wife Susan of Macungie, Kenneth and wife Jane of Gaithersburg MD; daughters, Linda wife of Brian Mihalik of Blacksburg VA, Judith wife of Phil Kapun of Lake Havasu AZ; Nine grandchildren; two great grandsons; brother, Alfred and sister Edna Landis both of Allentown.
