On January 5, 2023, Stephen Tar was reunited with his beloved wife of 59 years, Jenny Tar. Stephen spent the last 3 years talking about seeing her in heaven and the day has come for them to be together. Stephen died peacefully on Thursday evening surrounded by family in Lumberton, NJ. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Mary, and son-in-law, Mark Coffey. He was a cherished Pop-Pop by his three grandchildren, Victoria, Andrew, and Brandon Coffey. Born on May 24, 1939 in Zsadány, Hungary, Stephen was the son of the Ferenc Tar and Margit (Tokai) Tar and the brother of Frank Tar, Anthony Tar, Anna Maria (Tar) Molnar, and Louis Tar. Stephen fought in the 1956 Hungarian Uprising against the domestic policies imposed by the Soviet Union. In November of 1956, he left Hungary as a refugee, crossed into Austria and eventually went to
Bremerhaven, Germany where he boarded the USS Eltinge and headed to Brooklyn, NY. Stephen  entered the US on January 1, 1957 and then lived in Bethlehem, PA where he met his wife, Jenny. He proudly served in the US Army from 1958 to 1960 and then the National Guard Reserves until 1961. He enlisted in the US Navy Seabees in 1966 and served until 1974. Stephen was a truck driver for over 30 years, starting at Hess's Department store in the early 1970s. He then worked to deliver piggybacked Mack trucks across the country for many years, and eventually became an instructor teaching new drivers how to handle and maneuver the Big Rigs. In his spare time, he was an avid auto mechanic and enjoyed watching sports of every kind. Stephen will forever be remembered for being proud of his Hungarian heritage, always lending a hand to others, being able to give detailed directions and landmarks for any US city from memory, dancing the night away with his wife, spoiling his grandchildren, and telling stories. A large part of his life was devoted to the Hungarian community through his active involvement and longtime membership at the Magyar Tanya Club. Stephen loved being around and talking to people, especially his friends and family. If you knew him at all, you have heard stories of his wonderful life, his family and the gratitude he had for all of it.
A calling will be held at Norcross Weber Funeral Home, 101-B North Main Street, Coopersburg, PA on
Saturday, January 21, 2023 starting at 10:00 A.M. followed by a Service at 11:00 A.M. Interment will
follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
