Stanley R. Harris, M.D.,88, died peacefully at home on August 20. Born in Coventry, England, September 24, 1927, son of William R. and Rachel Coleman Harris, he received a Governor's Scholarship to attend Bablake School in Coventry and was an evacuee from that school to Lincoln during WWII. He studied engineering at Coventry Technical School. He received the Sir Thomas White Scholarship to the University of Liverpool, where he was the editor of its newspaper. He was a Freeman of the city of Coventry for having served an apprenticeship in engineering. He received a Graduate of Mechanical and Constructional Engineering in London; and a Medical Degree from the General Medical Council in London; Member of Society of Apothecaries of London; 1959-63 General Practice, Nova Scotia, Canada. He did radiation therapy and isotope residency at Ottawa Civic Hospital in Canada (Ontario Cancer Foundation); internship at Jefferson Medical College; Radiation Physics at University of Pennsylvania; Radiobiology Research at Jefferson. Radiation Isotopes at Hahnemann University and NIH Research Fellowship at Oxford University in England. He is a National Cancer Fellow. He has a specialist diploma in Medical Radiotherapy from the Royal Colleges of Medicine and Surgery in London, Certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, Institute Gustav-Roussy, Paris, France; NIH Research Fellowship, Churchill Hospital, London, England; and Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, D.C. He was Chairman of Radiation Protection and Isotope Committee and Director of Division of Radiation Therapy and Nuclear Medicine at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia; Radiation Protection Office, Lankenau Hospital; Director of the Departments of Therapeutic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown and Chairman of the Tumor Board. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Lehigh County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Oncologic Society, Society of Nuclear Medicine, and American College of Radiology. He retired in 1992. Dr. Harris was a member of the former Penguin Skating Club having participated in skating competitions throughout the United States, as well as dancing competition in Great Britain and the United States and is a recipient of the National Teachers of Dance medal from Great Britain. He loved to play tennis and golf and was a former member of the West End Racquet Club.
He is survived by his wife, Regina (Weber) of 15 years; stepson, Timothy McGroarty, and his wife, Natalie, of Emmaus; stepgrandchildren, Stacey Hostetter and her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Hostetter of Center Valley; Paul T. McGroarty of Belleair Bluffs, FL; stepbrother, Raymond Weber and wife, Emily of Morris Plains, NJ; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, all of Great Britain. He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Harris, of Coventry, England.
