IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rose A.
Schoenenberger
August 28, 1924 – August 23, 2019
A recipe box in a grandchild's kitchen carries the mark of a woman whose legacy was more than just her amazing baked goods. Known to many as Grandma Rose, to some as Mom-Mom, and to others simply as Mom, Rose Schoenenberger passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 23, 2019.
After 94 years and 360 days of walking this earth as a prayerful, loving, and strong-willed woman who had a way with flour, Rose's memory lives on in the stories she told, in the Rosary she said every day (and during every Mass she attended or watched on EWTN), and in the scent of Chantilly perfume that lingers on the greeting cards she sent to all her family for every holiday. Her life began on August 28, 1924 when she was born to Rose and Emerick Yost in Allentown. She attended Central Catholic High School before graduating from Sacred Heart Nursing School in 1945, and then worked as a nurse at Sacred Heart and Allentown Osteopathic Hospitals until she retired in 1981.
Her preferred nursing specialty was newborns, a passion reflected in the family she started. In 1946 she married Ellsworth "Alex" Schoenenberger, and they celebrated a loving marriage until his death in 1993. Her legacy lives on in their three children, Patricia (wife of Dennis), Timothy (husband of Eileen), and Gary (husband of Patricia); and in her six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Throughout her life, her love for her family and for her faith was evident. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and a devoted supporter of various missionary groups. She was happiest, however, when she was surrounded by her family at holidays, where stories were swapped, coffee was percolated and sipped, and strudel was savored like the memories her loved ones carry with them. Her family and many close friends will also remember her fervor for the Philadelphia Phillies (including her frustration with the "Dummies!" when they would lose), her excitement for bingo club, her daily weather reports, her wit, her spunk, and her heart of gold. Rose lived up to her name in the impeccable garden she kept, and in the fresh-cut flowers she would send home to her grandchildren.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 10am on Tuesday, September 3 rd after a viewing at 9am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her memory to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at https://www.nationalshrine.org/donate/ .
