Fisher
June 10, 1944 – May 9, 2024
Robert J. Fisher, 79, of Upper Saucon Township died on May 9th, 2024. Born in Hazleton, PA, he was the son of the late Mary (Hendershedt) and Carl Fisher. Bob was the husband of Linda (Moyer) Fisher, his beloved high school sweetheart.
In 1966, Bob graduated summa cum laude from Bloomsburg University with a BS degree in Secondary Education. He was awarded a National Defense Education Act fellowship for graduated study in American History and received ed his MA degreee from the University of Cincinnati in 1967. Mr. Fisher then began a high school teaching career that spanned 35 years. He taught in Florida, Maryland and Connecticut before assuming a position on the faculty of William Allen High School in 1971. There he taught AP American History and developed elective courses including "American Foreign Policy Since WWII" and "Soviet Studies". Mr. Fisher's students' success on the AP Exam and admission to some of the nation's leading universities was a source of great pride and personal satisfaction to him. From 1976-1988, Mr. Fisher organized and escorted four study tours of students and teachers to the Soviet Union and helped coordinate several reciprocal visits by Soviet students and teachers to Allen High School and the Lehigh Valley. He was passionate about fostering the idea of "detente", promoting better relations between the Cold War superpowers. At Allen, Mr. Fisher also served as faculty advisor to the Contemporary Affairs Club and Allen Ski Club. He coached football from 1977-78.
Throughout his teaching career, Bob served on executive committees of both the Allentown Federation of Teachers and the Allentown Education Association. For more than two decades he was an adjunct professor in Penn State University's Union Leadership Academy, providing continuing education for local labor leaders. Upon retiring from Allen High School, Mr. Fisher continued teaching, as a adjunct professor a Northampton Community College and DeSales University. He also contributed numerous Letters to the Editor that were published in the Morning Call. He was a member of the U.S. Labor Party and the ACLU.
In his free time, Bob enjoyed skiing and traveling all over North America and Europe with his family. He especially looked forward to annual visits to Manine and Vermont. He was also an avid golfer who was active in a league with fellow Allentown teachers.
in addition to his wife Linda, Bob is survived by his daughter Gretchen, wife of Doug Kelly of Bethlehem and his son Dr. Justin Fisher, husband of Dr. Laura (Snyder) Fisher of Manheim, PA. The light of Linda and Bob's retirement years was their dear grandchildren Catey and Clay Kelly and Anna and Lily Fisher. Bob was predeceased by a brother , James W. Fisher of Hazleton and is also survived by a niece and two nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Southern Lehigh Public Library as Bob was an avid reader who always enjoyed learning more about history, politics and current events.
