Richard Manard Markel, age 91, of Audubon, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on May 27th, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion to family.
Born and raised in York, Pennsylvania, Richard lived a life defined by humility, integrity, and quiet strength. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. During his career, he worked for General Electric and later Lockheed Martin, contributing to America’s space program during a remarkable period of innovation and exploration.
Above all else, Richard was devoted to his family. He shared nearly 62 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Virginia Markel. Their enduring love and partnership were the foundation of their family and a source of inspiration to all who knew them. Richard especially cherished spending time with Virginia and treasured the life they built together.
He is survived by his children: John Markel; Kathryn Palkovics; Robert Markel and his wife, Gretchen; and James Markel and his wife, Cathie. He was also a proud and loving grandfather to nine grandchildren, each of whom brought him great joy.
Richard was a quiet, kind, and thoughtful man whose actions spoke louder than words. An avid reader throughout his life, he found great enjoyment in books and was always eager to learn.
