Obituary

Michael Tackack, age 101, of Allentown, Pennsylvania passed April 17th, 2025. Born February 22nd, 1924 in Kulpmont, PA to parents George and Teresa (Kucharik) Tackack, Michael was the husband of Mary (Hichar) Tackack, who passed on February 10th, 2013.

After serving 3 years in WWII, Mike owned and operated a beverage business, appropriately named "VETERAN'S BEVERAGE" for over 20 years in Allentown, PA. Mike provided home delivery service to his customers and delivered to businesses. Mike was also employed for over 10 years at Bethlehem Steel Corporation, as well as for over 10 years for the Allentown School District. Mike participated in monthly WWII CBI veterans group meetings, even though the attendance has dwindled from over 100 members to less than 10. Mike was proud to be a member of the group and appreciated the camaraderie shared with his fellow WWII veterans.

While serving an extended tour of duty, Michael completed 107 missions as an Aerial Engineer and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Asiatic Medal with 3 Battle Stars. Mike's tour of duty began in March of 1943; he had just turned 19 in February. Mike completed basic training and graduated in December of 1943. He was assigned to technical Air Craft Mechanics School at Seymour Johnson Field in Goldsboro, NC. After graduating in 5 months, Mike then attended Aerial Gunnery School at Buckingham Army Air Base in Ft Myers, FL. He experienced his first flight on a B-11 Bomber, and then was assigned to a B-26 Morton aircraft at Barksdale field in Shreveport, LA. Mike was part of the beginning of the 3rd Combat Cargo Group, which started numbering 105 aircraft, divided into 4 squadrons, namely the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. Mike was in the 11th squadron.

Michael is proud to have served his community by voting every year. Michael faithfully attended church services at the Blessed Virgin Mary Orthodox Greek Catholic Church in Allentown, PA. Mike enjoyed spending time with his only granddaughter, Anya. Both Michael and Anya experienced an unforgettable day as Michael was recognized at Anya's Kutztown PA Youth Association's Military Recognition Day. Michael was discharged in October of 1945. He always remembered the fine relationships and experiences he had with a group of men who did a superb operation. Not all of Michael's fellow soldiers came back from the war. Michael survived the experience of WWII, and he was one of the lucky ones.

In addition to his parents and wife, Michael is predeceased by his siblings George "Sleepy" Tackack, Edward Hirak, and Margaret Leitgeb.

Michael is survived by his sons Scott Tackack husband of Stephanie, and David Morris, and granddaughter Anya Tackack.
