Leonard J. Heckenberger
Leonard J. Heckenberger, of Allentown, an advocate for the arts, community activist, local businessman and unofficial humorist, passed away on December 5, 2009. He was the husband of Ann (Desmond) Heckenberger and the youngest son of the late Leonard C. and Caroline (Annas) Heckenberger.
Born in Allentown on December 19, 1937, he was a graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School and attended St. Francis College (PA) and Moravian College. He was a lifelong member of St. Catherine of Sienna, previously serving on the Parish council.
He was a US army veteran. He was the founder of and President of Seaboard Subscription Agency and later, Seaboard Medical Systems.
He served as President and Board Member of the Lehigh County Young Democrats, earning an invitation to the inaugural ball of President Lyndon B. Johnson. He was Campaign Chairman for several victorious local Democratic candidates for over 40 years. He was a proud Eagle Scout and former local boy scout troop leader.
A fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, he was also a past, present and executive board member of the Columbian Home. He served on the Board of the Baum School of Art.
He was a devotee to Ocean City, NJ, a voracious reader, a champion for fun and a man of great faith.
Survivors: In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Annie, son, Andrew, and sister, Gloria Butler. He was pre-deceased by sister JeanMarie Steidel, brother, Robert, and cousin, Virginia Vitalos.
