Obituary

Joseph J. Barnas, Sr., 91, of Allentown, PA, entered eternal rest peacefully on June 23, 2018 at Sacred Heart Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Joseph was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA and he was the son of the late John G. Barnas and Catherine Barnas (Ofsenka).

Joseph was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, the late Theresa Jean Barnas (Macho) who passed away on January 6, 2014; sisters: Ann Hvozdovic and Marie Grula; brother: John J. Barnas; grand daughter: Tracy Lynn Sult; and his daughter: Patricia Ann Marie Mertz. Joseph is survived by his son, Joseph J. Barnas Jr., and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Joseph proudly served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean War and retired from active military duty after 42 years of dedicated and distinguished service attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. Joseph retired from the Allentown Branch of the United States Postal Service and he also worked for Bethlehem Steel and the Fuller Company before he became a truck driver for Dan Schantz Greenhouses for 20 years. Joseph was a proud member of the Allentown Police Reserves for 35 years and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 528 - Calvary and attained Third and Fourth Degrees.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation services on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the Weber Funeral Homes, P.C. located at 1619 W. Hamilton Street, Allentown, PA 18102. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M precisely on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi Church located at 1046 W. Cedar Street, Allentown, PA 18102. Interment will take place at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery located in Annville, Pennsylvania 17003 on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 1:30 P.M. with full Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org ; Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org and the Allentown Rescue Mission at www.allentownrescuemission.com .
