John was born to a large family in the Pennsylvania Dutch community in 1927–He was the 13th of 14 children. Despite humble beginnings John was industrious and a hard worker, committing many years as a well driller and to road construction.

He met and married the love of his life, Joyce Hobden, and together they raised 5 children.

John never met a stranger. He could talk to anyone and is famous for his elaborate stories, his jokes, and, of course, his yodeling.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 13 siblings, his wife Joyce, and his son Darryl Yothers. He leaves behind his daughters—Sandra Mason: Berlin, MD (Stan), Chylia Hesch: Whitehall, PA (Andrew), Suellen Moser: Newark, DE (William)— and son Dale Yothers of Lancaster, SC (Debbie). He is also missed by his 12 grandchildren (Stan "Bud", Todd, Tamara, Stephanie, Stuart, Colin, Amber, Jordan, Kimberly, Rachelle, William "Billy" and Brent), his great grandchildren and his great-great grandchildren who all called him "Pop".
