Dr. Andrew (Andy) Cooper Fix, 63, of Coopersburg, PA, passed away in hospice care at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, on Thursday, June 28, 2018.
Andy was born in Winston-Salem, NC, on February 14, 1955. He was the son of the late Joseph T. Fix and Mary (Molly) Brietz Fix. He was married to Lou Carol (Brown), with whom he celebrated 40 years of marriage in July 2017. Andy received a Bachelor of Arts in History and Philosophy from Wake Forest University, and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. His teaching career began in 1984 as Assistant Professor of History at Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL. He then became Assistant, Associate, and Professor of History at Lafayette College, Easton, PA. In 2003 he was named the Charles A. Dana Professor of History at Lafayette. He also taught as Visiting Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, in Brussels, Belgium. Andy received many honors and awards for scholarship and teaching, as well as research grants and fellowships. These included a Fulbright Fellowship to The Netherlands. He was a member of honor societies including Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta (history), and Delta Phi Alpha (German), and was an elected member of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde and the Kerkhistorische Gesellschap in The Netherlands. He spearheaded the Lafayette College Foreign Study Program in Brussels, and with his wife and young son took groups of students to study abroad in 1989 and 1993. Andy published Prophecy and Reason: The Dutch Collegiants in the Early Enlightenment ; Fallen Angels: Balthasar Bekker, Spirit Belief, and Confessionalism in the Seventeenth-Century Dutch Republic ; co-edited with Susan C. Karant-Nunn Germania Illustrata: Essays on Early Modern Germany, Festschrift for Gerald Strauss ; and was in the final stages of his magnum opus book Out of Darkness: Comets as Portents in an Era of Social and Cultural Crisis – 400BC-1700AD . He authored numerous published articles and presented papers at many academic conferences since 1983. He was the series editor with the Dutch publisher Brill of Brill's Studies in Intellectual History: Brill's Texts and Sources in Intellectual History . He recorded a lecture series for The Teaching Company entitled The Renaissance, Reformation, and Rise of Nations . His greatest joys were research and writing; teaching and interacting with students; conversing with scholars and colleagues, especially over wine; feeding the birds; watching his son—whom he dearly loved and of whom he was so proud—develop into a scholar in his own right; and his beloved wife.eHe
Andy is survived by his wife Lou Carol; his son Adam L. Fix; mother-in-law Betty Brown; brother-in-law Kenny Brown and wife Tami; brother-in-law Terry Dull; and first cousins Thomasin Bradford, Beth Porter and David Marshall. His sister, Bette Brietz Dull, pre-deceased him.
A service of remembrance will be held at Colton Chapel on the campus of Lafayette College in September.
